The Thunder Boys

At the beginning of 2016 the coaches of Thunder Football Academy and Raad decided that it was time to start inviting some of the Kawangware street boys (homeless boys) into football training. The boys were told that they could come in and watch the football training and were welcome to participate, in return we offered a hot meal at the end of training. By the summer it had become apparent that a certain group of boys attended on a very regular basis. The boys were told that if they continued attending football that Thunder would help them.

It was decided that The Thunder Foundation would rent accommodation for these boys to have somewhere safe to live and that our football coaches would run this project. In the beginning of September 2016 a suitable ‘flat’ was found.

The flat is in the same block where Geoff, our football coach lives. The flat is just one big long room with two doors both opening out to the third floor open landing, and four windows. There is no running water, kitchen or bathroom, but there is electricity. The toilets and showers are communal. Water is collected and paid for daily from a water lorry that arrives by the main entrance of the flats.

A carpenter was employed to build a kitchen/cooking area for a two ring calor gas hob with cupboards either side to house the food and cooking utensils. Another cupboard was made for storing clothes and personal items. A large walk in cupboard was made for storing the football equipment.

On Sunday 11th September 2016 our Thunder boys spent their first night in their new home. It was decided that Geoff’s son, Douglas and friend would sleep in the flat to support the boys. The boys were all given a mattress, covers, blankets and toiletries.

Since then the boys have changed immensely and are barely recognizable from the boys we started with.

The boys are very independent, they do their own washing and they take it in turns to cook, clean the flat and wash the dishes. They have a weekly menu. Thunder provide the food, clothes, gas, electric, water, education, books, love and support.

The school that the boys attend has a partnership with Thunder. Our football Academy uses this schools football pitch and kitchen every evening and weekends. It is a five minute walk from the flat to school.

The flat is used as a club house for the football academy students when they are not at school. A safe haven for lots of children. There is a TV and PlayStation that is well used, fifa is played continually! Our boys are very well looked after, Raad takes them out most weekends. They have learnt to swim, experienced a Christmas turkey dinner as well as Christmas presents. New year’s eve barbeque and fireworks.

Although they have all been through so much hardship in their short lives they are enjoying every new experience that is offered to them. They are lovely boys helpful, caring, loving and fun to be with. They have completely changed their lives around. It’s amazing.

Did you know?

The UN estimates that there are over 60,000 homeless children in Nairobi.

The Thunder Foundation start an exciting new project where we were able to house 5 boys off the streets of Kawangware. Peter, Kevin, Steve, Bryan and Benjamin.

We would also like to thank Ashley B, Rajesh (from USN kenya), Joe P, Jen D, Steve P and Kelly & Paul for their continued support with the boys.
